Citizen Science Intern
Citizen Scientists work on many science projects where the public can help contribute. The public helps the scientists classify large data sets for their research. The Citizen scientists use the online website Zooniverse.org, which is managed by the Adler staff. Zooniverse allows the public to interact with the web-based research projects and members of the volunteer community. The Citizen Science interns work with the Adler Zooniverse team to create fun activities that help people develop an interest in citizen science projects. The teen interns learn about citizen science, become familiar with project structure an data sets, create text and media content for their peers around citizen science projects, connect with other organizations, and develop and test public education/outreach programming. This position helps teens to develop skills in communication, teamwork, data analysis, and an understanding of concepts in science.
Experience Development Intern
Experience Development Interns work with the Adler's web team. They prepare the Adler's existence on its website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and more! Interns capture audio, video, photos and more to make media content on Instagram video demonstrations. Interns also get the chance to interview astronomers, curators and other staff at the Adler. They also get the chance to blog about what they are working on to the Adler's online audience. This position helps students develop digital media production and design skills in video, editing, social networks for audiences, the ability to work independently on projects, set deadlines and goals, and being able to be aware of events that happen in space science and astronomy.
Far Horizons Intern
Far Horizons Interns work with the Adler's electronics lab to design, build and test instrument payload for the Far Horizons high altitude ballooning program. Far Horizons explorers send helium filled balloons up to 100,000 feet, bearing sensors, cameras, small instruments; sensors that measure pressure, temperature, radiation, atmospheric composition and anything else you want. The balloons are recovered by Far Horizons teams as far as Indiana and Michigan. In this position, students develop strong science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. They become familiar with digital and robotics technology, the ability to work independently on projects, set deadlines and goals, and knowledge about atmospheric space sciences as well as astronomy. Public Programs Intern
Public Programs Interns work directly with out visitors on the floor. They explain and translate very difficult information to our guests to make them feel more comfortable. Public Program interns are responsible for running activities and demonstrations that help visitors better understand the space science and astronomy information presented at the Adler. Interns work with young children, but definitely interact with people of all ages, races, and nationalities. The floor staff are the Adler's ambassadors to the public. This position helps students develop strong interpersonal skills like eye contact, positive altitude, presentation skills; speaking and explaining, self-confidence and an understanding of concepts in space science and astronomy.
Research/Writing (Astro-Journalist) Intern
Research/Writing Interns will help the Zooniverse's digital and online community of guests, visitors, and students to connect to galleries and shows that are available at the Adler. Interns will also help explain subjects that the museum is unable to cover. Interns work with Adult STEM Mentors to research Zooniverse-related science topics and write informative articles that are shared with the public through blog posts formatting on the Astro-Journalist Wordpress site and applicable Zooniverse project blogs. Interns collaborate with Zooniverse project scientists, developers and educators that are in this process. Interns will develop strong writing and communication skills, research and analysis skills, the ability to work independently and under supervision and have an understanding of basic science concepts.
Summer Camp Intern
Summer Camp Interns work with elementary and middle school aged students in the Adler's many summer camps. These camps provide great experiences for children which help them learn how to explore the universe around them. Many activities vary; parachute design to programming robots. Teen interns will assist camp counselors with daily tasks, as well as taking photos and videos of both campers and activities to share with family and friends. This position helps students develop strong educational skills; listening and explaining, the ability to mentor younger learners, group management, experience with audio-visual digital media technology and an understanding of concepts in space science and astronomy.
